Chapter 12

I parked the pickup on the main street. As I was walking towards the hotel, I heard someone call my name.

It was Ellie. She made a pretty picture, hair hanging loose around her shoulders, the sparkling green eyes making her smile even brighter. She wore a summery dress matching the color of her eyes. Ellie was one of those people who are born cheerful and remain that way most their lives.

“Hey, Axel. I thought you were going to call me this morning. Not nice to keep a girl waiting,” she said.

“Hey, Ellie. A lot’s happened after I dropped you last night… I’ve been on the road almost the whole time.”

“Really? In Little Butte? You must be the only busy man in town. Leisurely doesn’t even begin to describe the pace of life round here. Mable, my friend was leaving for work. She works in that salon,” she said, pointing to a salon behind us. “She’s the one giving me a ride the last few days. I decided to tag along and grab a coffee. It was boring staying at home. And you know what…”

I was worried about Ellie being seen with me. I was making too many enemies in town. I could be bad news for anyone seen as my friend. We were standing outside the coffee shop, which was less than 30 yards from the Dawson hotel. It was safer to talk in there than on the street.

“How about we grab that coffee you’re after? Shall we head inside the coffee shop and talk?”

“Sounds good,” she said, leading the way in.

“You know what,” she began talking before we had taken our seats, “you were right when you said the bar would be closed for a while. Actually, it’s the end of the road for that place. The new bar at the hotel is being opened tomorrow. Just like that. It was supposed to be a week later. But I got a call. I’m supposed to head there in the evening.”

“Really? They’re opening the new place tomorrow? Interesting.”

First the motel closing, then the bar… The Dawsons were surely feeling the pressure; my constant interference was not giving them time to catch their breath. I needed to keep up the pressure.

“Interesting? That’s a funny way to put it,” Ellie replied.

“Well, I’m not surprised about the old bar, after what happened there last night…”

“You mean when you bashed up those bikers and Tats?”

“Tats?” I asked.

“The bartender, remember?”

“Oh, yes. The guy with the weird name.”

“It wasn’t just his name that was weird. He wasn’t a friendly guy.”

“I did get that feeling when he and his pals decided to jump me.”

She laughed.

“So, what’ve you been up to? Why were you on the road all night? We have a nice hotel in town, in case you didn’t notice. And there’s a motel, which is a bit of a dump, but no worse than most motels you find.”

“I know the motel. It’s not in good shape right now,” I told her.

“Why? What happened? Did you beat up a bunch of guys over there as well?”

“No, nothing like that.
